These standards aim to reduce the risk of drowning, particularly among young children. They apply to all outdoor pools that can hold 60 cm (2 ft) or more of water, including inground, semi-inground, above-ground pools, as well as removable or inflatable pools.

Even pools installed before November 1, 2010 — which previously benefited from “grandfather rights” — will have to comply. However, the government has announced an extension of the deadline, now set for 2027 for many of these installations, to give owners more time to meet the requirements.

Mandatory Fencing and Access Control

To ensure safety, most pools must be protected by a fence at least 1.2 metres (4 ft) high, except for certain above-ground or removable models that can comply in other ways (e.g., walls high enough and a removable ladder).

The standards require that fences:

prevent the passage of an object 10 cm (4 in) in diameter

cannot be easily climbed

have chain-link mesh openings of 30 mm (1.2 in) or less, or be equipped with slats

cannot be replaced by a hedge, which is not considered compliant

Every door or gate providing access to the pool must have:

a self-closing mechanism

a safety latch installed on the pool side or at a minimum height when accessible from outside

Equipment and Clearances

Equipment such as the pump, filter, or heater must not be positioned in a way that could assist in climbing over the fence. They must therefore be at least 1 metre (3.3 ft) away from the fence or protected by a barrier at least 1.2 m (4 ft) high.

A Stylish and Compliant Solution

To meet these requirements while maintaining a modern look, our company offers tempered-glass fencing that fully complies with current standards.
